Sake brewery in Kumamoto and a tea specialist with a history dating back to 1626 sit behind two of Wafood Made’s defining ingredients. Sake lees and Uji matcha connect this Japanese skincare brand to the people, places and food traditions that inspire its products.
At Kösme, we chose Wafood Made because it brings something distinctive to a familiar skincare step: the face mask. Our selection focuses on the Sake Lees and Uji Matcha packs, with a different starting point depending on what you want from that extra moment of care.
From the Sake Press to the Tea Bowl
You may remember the story of the sake brewers’ youthful hands from our article on SK-II. There, it introduced PITERA and the role of yeast fermentation. Wafood Made draws on a similar Japanese saying, taking us back to the brewery through a different ingredient: sake lees.
Known as sake kasu, these are the soft solids left after fermented rice mash is pressed. Wafood Made’s Sake Lees line uses an extract from lees sourced at Kawazu Brewery in Kumamoto. The brewery combines Japanese rice, spring water from Aso and Kumamoto yeast, then uses the traditional fune shibori method: sake is gently pressed from mash held in cloth bags, leaving moist lees behind.

We like how that origin carries through to the finished mask. PDC designed its creamy paste to echo the feel of sake lees while spreading easily and staying in place. The line focuses on moisturising care, with the Sake Lees Pack made for skin that feels dry or looks dull.
The Uji Matcha line follows the same idea through Japanese tea culture. Its matcha is selected by Kyoto Rikyuen, a tea specialist whose history reaches back to 1626. This line focuses on smoothing the feel of rough or uneven skin. In the Uji Matcha Pack we stock, tea ingredients sit alongside sugar cane extract, which PDC includes to help soften dead skin cells on the surface.

At Kösme, we’ve chosen one mask from each line. They offer two ways into the same food inspired approach: Sake Lees for a softer, moisturised feel, and Uji Matcha when rough texture is your main concern.
What Wafood Made Is Known For & Awards It Got
The Sake Lees Pack has earned particular recognition. It took first place in the Best Rinse Off Mask category at the 2022 Best Cosmetics Awards, followed by second place in 2023 and 2024, and third place in 2025.
Brand Philosophy and Product Approach
PDC’s promises for Wafood Made include using Japanese ingredients for its main food materials, manufacturing in Japan under controlled production and inspection, and making the products straightforward to use. It also selects supporting ingredients to complement the main ingredient in each formula.
For customers, the useful question is how those ingredients contribute to the product. PDC identifies sake lees extract as a moisturising ingredient. Its Sake Lees Pack also contains rice ferment filtrate and other moisturisers. The Matcha Pack combines tea ingredients with ingredients chosen to support a smoother, moisturised skin feel.
An interesting ingredient story is not enough on its own. The product also needs to offer something useful for your skin. At Kösme, we look at the complete formula and what it is designed to do, then help you understand which mask may suit your needs and how to use it alongside your usual skincare.
The Wafood Made Masks We Have Chosen
Our current selection contains two masks, both in 170 g packs and each priced at CHF 25.
PDC Wafood Made - Sake Lees Face Mask Pack
This is the option we would start with when your main interest is moisturising care and a softer skin feel. PDC describes it as a mask that washes away old surface skin cells associated with dullness, while its moisturising ingredients help leave skin feeling comfortable.
Alongside sake lees extract, the formula includes glycerin, rice ferment filtrate, cucumber fruit extract, rice bran lipids and yuzu seed extract, bringing several moisturising ingredients together in a creamy mask.
We see it as an occasional addition to an established routine, particularly when you want to give more attention to how soft and comfortable your skin feels.
PDC Wafood Made - Uji Matcha Face Mask Pack
The Uji Matcha Pack focuses on a smoother skin feel. It combines Uji matcha selected by Kyoto Rikyuen with sugar cane extract, which PDC includes to help soften dead skin cells on the surface.
Its supporting ingredients include liquorice extract, a fermented ingredient derived from Job’s tears and natto gum derived from soy. PDC describes these as moisturising ingredients that support the formula’s focus on smoothness.
For us, this is the more relevant starting point if your priority is rough texture. It has a different focus from the Sake Lees Pack, even though both are used after cleansing and rinsed away. Choose according to the concern you want to address and the ingredients your skin already tolerates.
Why Wafood Made Fits Kösme
At Kösme, we want Japanese skincare to feel understandable and easy to bring into everyday life. We look for products with a clear purpose, and we want our selection to help you make a confident choice.
Wafood Made fits that approach because its ingredient stories connect directly to the products. The named brewery and tea specialist give the brand character, while the two masks offer a manageable introduction to its skincare philosophy.
We also like that you can add one product to a routine you already know. You can keep your usual cleanser and moisturiser, then choose a mask for the occasions when you want that extra step. There is no need to buy both to begin.
How to Choose the Right Wafood Made Mask

If a dry feel is your main concern
We would consider the Sake Lees Pack first for its moisturising focus. Follow it with your usual moisturiser. If your skin already feels sore or irritated, keep your routine simple and wait until it is comfortable before introducing an extra mask.
If rough texture bothers you most
We would look at the Uji Matcha Pack. Its formula is designed to help soften roughness and leave skin feeling smoother. Apply and rinse it gently, without adding a vigorous scrub to the same step.
If your skin is easily irritated
Check the full ingredient list before choosing. Both of the formulas currently listed on Kösme contain fragrance, and the listed Uji Matcha formula also contains alcohol. We would be particularly cautious if these are ingredients you already know your skin dislikes.
Introduce one new product at a time, try a small area first and stop using it if irritation occurs. Always refer to your product’s packaging for its current ingredients and directions.
A simple way to use either mask
After cleansing, lightly pat away excess water. Spread the mask over your face, avoiding the eyes and mouth. PDC’s directions suggest approximately a cherry sized amount for the Sake Lees Pack and a grape sized amount for the Uji Matcha Pack.
Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow with your usual skincare and moisturiser. The recommended frequency for these masks is two or three times a week; you can begin less often while you see how your skin responds.
Keep the mask as one clear step between cleansing and the products you leave on your skin. If you are trying Wafood Made for the first time, start with the single mask that best matches your priorities.

Q&A
Q. Is Wafood Made a Japanese skincare brand?
Yes. Wafood Made is a skincare brand from the Japanese cosmetics company pdc. It launched in 2017 and builds its approach around selected Japanese food ingredients.
Q. What are sake lees?
A. Sake lees, or sake kasu, are the solids left after fermented rice mash is pressed during sake production. Wafood Made uses an extract from those lees as a moisturising ingredient.
Q. Are these sheet masks?
A. Both products in our current selection are spreadable masks in pouches. You apply the formula to your skin and rinse it away after 5 to 10 minutes.
Q. Do I need both masks?
A. One is enough to start. We would choose Sake Lees for a moisturising focus or Uji Matcha for rough texture, according to your preferences and ingredient tolerance.
Q. Should I use them every day?
You do not need to. PDC recommends two or three uses a week for these masks. Follow the directions on your packaging and adjust to how your skin feels.
Q. Do I still need moisturiser afterwards?
Yes. Rinse the mask away, then continue with your usual skincare, including moisturiser. Treat the mask as an additional step in your routine.
Q. Will I pay customs fees when ordering in Switzerland?
There are no additional import or customs charges for Swiss deliveries. We fulfil Swiss orders from Zürich and ship with Swiss Post.
Q. Can Kösme help me choose?
Of course. Contact us with your main concern, the products you already use and any ingredients you avoid. We can help you compare the options and understand where a mask would fit.
